Since 2006 I have been developing a practice in which I draw on walls, stopping at various points to make video-images of the drawing. The process is continuous, progressing through constant revision. The "real" or original drawings have come and gone. Drawings have focused on the materiality of the surface, on the gesture, on design & scale.
Each drawing incorporates a paradox: at the same time plan on which to base a representation, and memento, inseparable from its relation to the moment of its making and from the fleetingness of that moment. The digital images are recorded memories that become new incentives to perform a new drawing, as if trying to remember what cannot be remembered. What remains is the gesture, a rendering visible of the drawing as a proper means, outside of which nothing exists. In that respect my drawings are not self-referential or autonomous in the modernist sense. Rather they take on the quality of an event.
